MotherHearts and Arlington West

May 16th, 2007

ArlingtonWest2.jpg In today’s inspirational story, the founder of MotherHearts shares her journey from despair over the War in Iraq to hope and compassionate action.  Last year, Lisa Wysel formed a grassroots peace organization that held their first annual event on Mothers Day.  Hundreds of people gathered on a stretch of beach called Arlington West where the Veterans for Peace volunteers tirelessly place crosses in the sand each and every Sunday—one for each soldier killed in the War in Iraq.  The community gathered to mourn for, and honor the young men and women who had been killed in the war.  In addition, the sea of crosses would not let anyone forget the importance of returning to the true spirit of Mother’s Day—a day for mothers to gather for peace.  Mothers for Peace Day, which was first started by Julia Ward Howe in the 1870’s, was the precursor to today’s Mother’s Day holiday.  In this broadcast, you’ll hear Julia Warde’s proclamation–an impassioned plea to mothers, imploring them to gather together to promote peace.   “…We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”  www.motherhearts.org

Beverlye Hyman Fead and her granddaughter, Tess Hammermish, are the show’s inspiring guests. Five years ago, Tess’ beloved grandmother was diagnosed with fourth stage, metastasized, inoperable cancer. But Tess says, “…she has cancer but she’s acting like she can race with the wind. And she’s proved the doctor’s wrong for five years.” For more information on Beverlye’s experimental new treatment and her book, I Can Do This, living with cancer, tracing a year of hope, visit her website at: www.beverlyehymanfead.com
